GINGERBREAD COOKIE RECIPE

GOOD MORNING! I promised a good friend of mine, that I would share my gingerbread man recipe with her. So I thought it would be fun to put it on my blog and everyone could enjoy! It is very low cal and more like a bread than a cookie. ENJOY! (NOTICE THE SANTA MADE BY JULIE OF MY RAGGEDY DOLLS IN THE BACKGROUND! Thanks Julie!)

GINGERBREAD MEN
by, Sylvia Gonzalez (The Gingerbread Corner)

1 1/2 cups molasses
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup cold water
1/3 cup oil
7 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cloves

Mix dry and wet ingredients separately and then together. Cover and refrigerate at least two hours. Cut into shapes using your favorite gingerbread cookie cutter. (I love to use my tiny ones the best and cut little hearts into them!!!) Bake at 350 degrees on a greased cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes. Don't over bake unless you want them very hard. You can decorate with icing or just eat them plain. Makes 2 1/2 dozen. YUMMY! ENJOY!

I am getting ready right now for the 35th Annual Santa's Smokestack Boutique which is here in the Concord. CA area NOVEMBER 6-7. It is a hugh boutique I do every year...I am the only doll vendor, so it is lots of fun! I will be taking down all the items though off my website to take with me, in addition to lots of other goodies I have been making. So, the items on my website will only be up for another two weeks. After that I have to do lots of tagging and sorting and making displays. It is a lot of work, but I like selling my items in town as well as to my internet friends. After Nov. 6-7, I will be redoing my website with new items. So if there is anything you want, now is the time to buy it...cause it may not be there after the boutique. We are finally finished painting our house and it also BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! My daughter is already back and my son starts next week. boo hoo! I am also starting lots of new students this week. BUT- don't fret, there is lots of time, now that the kids are back in school, to make new dollies! I am working on a SINGING DOLL right now....no, she doesn't really sing, but it looks like it! 30 Year High School Reunion!

Well, I missed my 30 year high school reunion this year....but ended up able to get together with some of my closest friends anyway.....we were a small, "nerdy" group ....so it was nicer to be able to see these gals in a more intimate setting. Met at Maureen's ranch/ home in Sonoma County . Everyone brought their families. It was nice to reminisce. We had made a "MOVIE" when we were in school based on the old British classic BEOWULF (yes...just like the Mel Gibson movie). We had to read it for British Lit and decided we needed to SPICE up the class. So, with one of our teachers, we made a movie. Came out hilarious....we all had to dress up like medieval guys....yes beards...although I got to play a servant girl/queen for one scene. It was a blast to rewatch the thing....which was more like a Monte Python classic than anything....since we had to dubb in the dialogue and music later....sound was SLIGHTLY OFF.....used lots of Stravinsky and Wagner music!! FUN TIMES!!!

Hope you all have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend. I am going to use it to catch up on dolls, house cleaning, etc. as well as have some family fun and fireworks. We usually create a FLAG CAKE made of pound cake, cool whip, strawberries and blueberries. Then we go see the fireworks near our house....maybe we will even get some swimming in too!
We just got back from visiting relatives in LA and went to the beach for one day, and Disneyland on another. It was a jam packed week. Sometimes when you get back from one of those busy weeks, you feel like you need a VACATION FROM THE VACATION....just because it is so tiring.... it is always nice to be home. I am not the best traveler I am afraid.
Anyway- this week my daughter also started phase two of braces in preparation for a jaw surgery next summer to correct her open bite. I had the same bad bite and same surgery about 20 years ago. I am so glad she is getting done younger so as not to end up with the same headaches and chewing problems I did. She will be so happy when it is done! She also started DRIVING LESSONS AND GOT HER DRIVER'S PERMIT! Yikes! It makes me feel old to have my baby driving. But I can tell she is going to be a very good driver! She works hard at everything she does....Well- bye for now and HAVE A SAFE WEEKEND ALL!

Summer Voice Recital!

Well my student's voice recital went very well. I am going to post some photos here for you. There were four students from my studio who were able to commit to the event. They performed musical theatre, opera, art song, popular songs, etc. It was a nice variety of music. At the end we had a scene from "Fiddler on the Roof." Then afterward, we had a nice reception outside the church in the garden. It was a wonderful, AND exhausting day. Now on with the summer. Copy and paste the link below for a slideshow of the event!

VOICE RECITAL WEEK!

Well, my kids are finally done with finals and school. Summer is officially here for them. This is birthday weekend in our house for my daughter and husband. Sunday I have my dress rehearsal with my students for our voice recital next weekend. It is almost here and they have all been working very hard! It will have a variety of art song, musical theatre, opera, and one staged/costumed scene from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. I am going to print the programs tonight.....My focus this week will be the recital, so I won't have time to be making any new dolls until after June 14th. Then I plan on spending much of the summer creating lots of goodies for my website and the Christmas boutique. I will try to take some photos of the recital to share with you all! take care for now!

This weekend my daughter was confirmed in the Catholic Church! It was at the new Cathedral in Oakland. It was a beautiful ceremony with four churches participating. I have attached a photo of the family (my husband, mom, daughter, me, and my son) outside the church and a photo of the Confirmation Doll I made as a gift for her. My kids finish school in three days and then my student recital is next week. BUSY BUSY!!!! Then it is doll making for the summer!!!! YEAH!

Happy Mother's Day to all! Where would we all be without out moms????? Anyway- the sun is shining and it is a beautiful day outside. Maybe the sun will get rid of all the bugs that have been going around...flu and colds! We are all just starting to feel normal again. Got a little behind with life especially dolls as I was trying to just keep up my other job of teaching and taking care of family. Also had some problems with my sewing machine. But hopefully all is well now. School is out is 4 weeks and my student recital is in 5 weeks....lots going on!!!!!!!!! Then summer is about relaxing and making lots of dolls for my Christmas Boutique. More to come on the Smokestack Boutique here in Concord. Well have a great weekend. And hope to get some more dolls up soon.

Well- Spring Break is over! Not much of a vacation as my daughter was ill for most of the time...but hopefully all is on the mend now. Everyone is back to work and school! So today I feel like I can get a lot done! Already exercised and am getting ready to start making some dolls and doing some errands. I also need to make time to practice my own singing! Not ever enough time for that. Worked this weekend on my flier and program cover for my student voice recital in June. Found a very pretty program cover with burgundy flowers and music notes in the background! Love it! More info. to come later!

Well we are already here in Holy Week. And Easter approaches, kids will be out of school. Time to rest a bit! I am adding a favorite recipe of mine for Easter morning breakfast....Hot Cross Buns! This is my mom's special recipe and so yummy to munch with your "candy" on Easter morning.
ENJOY!!

HOT CROSS BUNS
(Makes 24 buns)

-2 pkg. dry yeast
-1/2 cup warm water
-1/4 cup milk, scalded
-1/2 cup oil
-1/3 cup sugar
-3/4 tsp. salt
-3 1/2 to 4 cups flour
-1/2 to 1 tsp. cinnamon
-3 beaten eggs
-2/3 cup currants
-1 egg white
-powdered sugar

(Soften yeast in warm water. Mix milk, oil, sugar and salt. Cool. Mix 1 cup of flour with cinnamon and stir into first mixture. Add eggs and beat well. Stir in yeast and currants. Add enough flour to make a soft dough beating well. Cover with damp cloth and let rise till doubles. About 1 1/2 hours. Punch down. Turn out on floured surface, cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll or pat to 1/2 inch. Cut into 2 1/2 rounds and shape into buns. Place on a greased sheet. cover and let rise till doubles. About 1 hour. Cut shallow cross in each bun with sharp knife. brush tops with slightly beaten egg white. bake 375 degrees for 15 minutes. cool slightly and frost the cross area. Frosting recipe follows:)

Frosting for Hot Cross Buns:

-3/4 cup powdered sugar to remaining egg white OR water if you prefer. Pipe on crosses.

CAN MIX DOUGH NIGHT BEFORE AND REFRIGERATE AND CUT IN AM......ENJOY!!!

She was inspired by the many computer problems I have everyday!!! And especially with the big virus scare of April 1st! She is made from dyed/stained muslin. Her face is all hand stitched. (Her expression was inspired by one of my favorite pattern makers "Sweet Meadows Farm" Bad Attitude School Doll although the body is my own design.) Annie's shoes/socks are hand painted. Her hair is curly red wool doll hair pony tails. Annie's dress is made from a small barn red and white dot calico. HER APRON AND BOWS ARE MADE FROM THE MOST DARLING COMPUTER FABRIC. IT IS THE REAL SIZE AND SHAPE OF A FULL COMPUTER KEYBOARD WITH ALL THE BUTTONS/KEYS!!! It is the cutest things I have ever seen. My daughter designed the prim tag which is a computer that says, "DON'T PUSH MY BUTTONS!" So if you are a computer nerd, student, teacher, e-bay computer nut, or whatever....you will love this doll! SHE IS SMALL ENOUGH TO TAKE TO WORK TO SET ON YOUR DESK NEXT TO YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!! So when you are having a bad computer day, just look over to Annie to get a laugh!!!!!

Lost a Week!

Well- I feel like I lost a week somewhere. My daughter had her four wisdom teeth taken out on Friday Feb. 27 and it took until today for her to return to school. She had a tough recovery. Boy I have never made so many ice cream shakes in my life. It was a challenge to make soft foods she could eat. She is preparing to start braces again soon and a jaw surgery for an open bite in a year. I went through the whole process myself almost 2o years ago as an adult....surgery and all. I feel bad I passed my terrible bite onto her....anyway- she is on the road to recovery and I am back to work today. Missed making dolls last week......but still kept up with lessons. We are adding a "Fiddler on the Roof" scene hopefully to the June recital. We have a voice workshop this weekend to begin rehearsing and once a month now until thenl. Wish us luck....I did start a couple more school dolls and bunnies and hope to finish them soon! Thanks for checking in!!!!!!!!!!

EASTER BUNNY TEA PARTY DOLL ON EBAY!

I have added a new doll to ebay tonight. She is so sweet and made with an Easter fabric with a Bunny Tea Party on it. She comes with a handmade bunny of her own, and a little tea cup. Wow! I can't believe it is February already! And that today is my birthday----the big 48! I have to teach today, but bought some wonderful brownies to eat tonight for dessert! My husband surprised me with some flowers and a card last night cause he leaves so early in the morning, I wouldn't see him until tonight after I am done teaching...My kids and husband told me they ordered me an IPOD!! My kids each have one, and I have been trying to use theirs when I exercise. So I think they realized I needed my own. Can't wait until it arrives! I can put all my OPERA music on it....Lots of Puccini!!! Recital plans are going well for my June student voice recital. More to come on that later. Want to get going on some more dolls this weekend. I have lots of ideas....but never enough time!!!!! Back to work!!!

BAD ATTITUDE SCHOOL GIRL ON EBAY!

I have wanted to make this doll for the longest time: The Bad Attitude School Doll. It is a Sweet Meadows Farm pattern. I love it cause it reminds me of Monday morning!!! For more photos of it, go to my ebay link on the right. She comes with a little bag that says LUNCH and a prim tag that says SCHOOL DAZE! Anyway, I plan on making more....I have TONS of different school themed fabric. I want to make some for the Santa's Smokestack Boutique that I have started doing every year now. I am still working on my skating dolls. Life has been so busy as I have decided to put on a voice recital with my students again. Lots of work and coordinating with their schedules. But always a good learning experience for them....Having TWO JOBS as voice teacher and doll maker can sometimes be challenging. I feel like two different people!!!! Both are my passion though so I can't imagine giving one up. I plan on spending the next two days on dolls though....
PS. My birthday is coming up...THE BIG 48!! YIKES! My kids are looking forward to the CAKE PART! We don't eat it often....so can't wait!!!!!!!!!! It's got to be CHOCOLATE!!!!!

Well- I am so happy 2009 is finally here! My kids are not as happy, because that means that vacation is over and it is BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! But it was a hard year for me, so I am glad to move on. As some of you know, my younger brother passed away this Sept. from cancer at the age of 46. So we are all still recovering. Work was sometimes my only consolation. Teaching singing and making happy little dolls. But there were days when this was even tough....I will always remember my little brother Georgie, and all the good times we had as little kids....
Speaking of being a little kid, I did something fun over vacation! I went ICE SKATING for the first time in 30 years! I used to go every Friday night to the Redwood Empire Ice Arena built by Charles Schultz (Snoopy and the Peanuts comic strip author) as a young teen and had fond memories. I don't know what I was thinking, but I tried it again during the vacation. My kids said I was GLOWING! they hadn't seen me that happy in years. I didn't fall either...Only problem was I killed my ankles. I forgot I had an ankle injury in my late teens and remembered as I pulled the skates off. My ankles had bruises on them! Oh well, it was worth it!!!! I will never forget the day. In fact, I came home and started making a SKATING DOLL....just for me!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also started making some Easter bunnies and Valentine's dolls. Got a little behind though now cause I had to work on my California State Taxes due at end of Jan. But I will get back to work soon. Anyway- take care and check back in soon! PS. The bunnies are on E-Bay right now!!

GINGERBREAD MUFFINS

I recently found this recipe in my favorite holiday recipe book from COOKS MAGAZINE. It is called Quick and Easy Gingerbread Muffins...I haven't tried it yet, but will this week as they look delicious. I wanted to keep up on adding new gingerbread recipes to my blog from time to time. Here it is:

QUICK AND EASY GINGERBREAD MUFFINS
(makes 12 muffins)

Be careful not to overmix the batter in step 2; overwise the muffins will be tough.

-2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
-1/2 teaspoon table salt
-1 tablespoon ground ginger
-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
-1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
-2 large eggs
-1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
-1 cup buttermilk
-1 stick unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 375 degrees. Spray standard muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and allspice in medium bowl until combined. Whisk together eggs, brown sugar, and buttermilk in large bowl until combined. Add melted butter and whisk vigorously until thick and homogeneous. Whisk half of dry ingredients into wet ingredients until two begin to come together and then add remaining dry ingredients and stir with rubber spatula or wooden spoon until just combined (do not overmix).

3. Use ice cream scoop or large spoon to drop batter into greased muffin tin. Bake until golden and toothpick inserted into center of muffin comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Cool muffins in tin for 5 minutes and then transfer to wire rack and cool for 10 more minutes. Can be sprinkled with powdered sugar.

CHRISTMAS WEEK!

Well, vacation is finally here! My kids are done with school and out now for 2-3 weeks. We look forward to lots of baking and fun!! This weekend we will get started on our gingerbread cookies and mexican wedding cakes. We've also been making lots of shortbread. For all my friends who wanted to know the recipe, I will include it here today. It is really meant to be made in a "Brown Bag Cookie Art" shortbread ceramic pan. These are available mostly online now as they are discontinued in most stores...ebay has them etc....(they have the greatest shapes and patterns on their pans.) If you don't have one of these pans, I think you can probably make the shortbread in a small pie dish and just bake it a little longer? Not sure, but I think the brown bags bake faster because they are ceramic. You may need to double the recipe if it is a large pan....ENJOY!!!

CLASSIC SHORTBREAD
(From the Brown Bag Recipe Book)

-1/2 cup butter at room temperature
-1/3 cup powdered sugar- unsifted
-1/4 teaspoon vanilla
-1 cup flour- unsifted

Cream the butter until it is light. Cream in the powdered sugar, then the vanilla. Now work in the flour. Knead the dough on an unfloured board until nice and smooth. Spray the shortbread pan very lightly with a non-stick vegetable oil spray. Firmly press the dough into the shortbread pan. Prick the entire surface with a fork, and bake the shortbread right in the pan at 325 degrees for about 30-35 minutes, or until very lightly browned. Let the shortbread cool in its pan for about 10 minutes before you loosen the edges with a knife and flip the pan over onto a wooden cutting board. If the shortbread does not come right out, tap one edge of the pan. Cut the shortbread into the serving pieces while it is still warm.

Let the pan cool before washing in sink or dishwasher.

We're back from Thanksgiving vacation....Always glad to be home!!!
My website is almost up and running. Just waiting for a couple of hook ups on shipping and payments. I am getting excited about it. I will probably be moving my ebay stuff over now to the website and only be listing things from time to time on ebay. Hope to get it up and running early next week, still in time for Xmas shopping. Olive Spaghetti!

A great vegetarian meal!

OLIVE SPAGHETTI:
(Sylvia's favorite)

-1lb spaghetti, cooked
-2 cloves garlic, minced
-2 cups parsley, chopped
-1 jar pimentos
-2 cups black olives, chopped
-2 cups walnuts, chopped
-2 cups grated cheese (optional)
-Olive oil for sauteing

Saute garlic in oil until browned. Add cooked spaghetti and saute until coated with oil. Add all other ingredients. Mix and Serve!!!
This dinner is FABULOUS warm or cold!

MEXICAN WEDDING CAKES :
(my mom's favorite- we make these every Christmas)

-1 cup of butter
-1/2 cup powdered sugar
-1 tsp. vanilla
-2 1/4 cups flour
-1/4 tsp. salt
-3/4 cup finely chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix butter, sugar, and vanilla. Stir flour and salt together. Work in rest with nuts. Form in one inch balls. Bake 10-12 minutes on ungreased sheet till set, but not brown. Roll in powdered sugar while warm, and then once again when cool.

ENJOY!!!

Gingerbread Recipe :)

GOOD MORNING! I promised a good friend of mine, M---, that I would share my gingerbread man recipe with her. So I thought it would be fun to put it on my blog and everyone could enjoy! It is very low cal and more like a bread than a cookie. ENJOY!

GINGERBREAD MEN
by, Sylvia Gonzalez (The Gingerbread Corner)

1 1/2 cups molasses
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup cold water
1/3 cup oil
7 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cloves

Mix dry and wet ingredients separately and then together. Cover and refrigerate at least two hours. Cut into shapes using your favorite gingerbread cookie cutter. (I love to use my tiny ones the best and cut little hearts into them!!!) Bake at 350 degrees on a greased cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes. Don't over bake unless you want them very hard. You can decorate with icing or just eat them plain. Makes 2 1/2 dozen. YUMMY! ENJOY!

Hi Everyone!
This is my first post on my first blog! My daughter helped me create this blog tonight. We are also working on getting a website up and running for my doll business. I am so excited about this. I have been on ebay for a while now, but look forward to having my OWN site.

This weekend, I was a vendor in a big boutique here in town called Santa's Smokestack Boutique. I had a lot of fun making all the dolls for it. It was a little slow, probably because of the economy....but I will be putting some of the items on ebay as well....
